Current mood: hmm....

Hi flist!
Um, so my mom wants to buy a laptop for herself but she's in Italy. And I'm in the U.S. She's asking me for specs and I can handle that, but I gotta know...

WINDOWS VISTA: BOO or YAY?

Boo. Definitely. My dad has it and it's got problems -> least of all is the crashing it likes doing.

...I kinda figured with the bad press it's getting that Vista is not really that good. Well then, I'll just tell my mom to get an XP (if that's possible, who knows with Italy :P). Thanks!

Yeah, at least with XP, microsoft has had the time to come out with patches to fix any bugs.

I just bought a new computer and the only trouble I have had with Vista is getting my XP laptop to talk with the new Vista computer. I'll get it or I'll die trying!

Would you say that Vista is more user-friendly than XP? Because my mom isn't used to computers at all... I taught her the basics of XP, email, searching the web and Instant Messaging, but she might get confused with Vista. :|

Then again, how should I know if Vista's confusing? I haven't even used it. :P

I think both are user friendly. I am more use to XP though because I have been using it longer. But teh more I work with Vista, the more sense it makes. And eventually everything IBM compatible will be VISTA anyway. Might as well get use to it! :)

oh god, everything will become vista? :| But I have to say, a lot of people are still using XP, and my mom knows XP, and it'll probably cost less. For a computer that probably won't be used that much, I'm leaning towards XP. But I'm glad Vista isn't as horrible as some people make it out to be. :)

Me, I'm staying with Mac OS X. Haha.

it's okay... if you're not a big computer user, you know? i know people that didn't know the difference, besides the graphics.

honestly, i really really really dislike vista (i'm not going to use hate, because, then, well, my laptop is going to crash on me, and i don't want that to happen... shhh!).

so depending on how computer savvy she is, what she's going to use it for, and i guess the price range you're looking for, it's your choice?

hahaha, i was of no use -.-;;

Oo, point. Since my mom has very limited exposure to computers, she might adapt faster to Vista (though I probably won't be able to help if she calls me to troubleshoot). But how about the over-all performance? Adela_nightmoon says it crashes. :| Does it really? O__o

honestly, mine runs smoothly. as long as you keep up with the upgrades, no problems whatsoever. but that also may be cause i take extra care of my electronics.

HOWEVER!! XP is simpler to use, than vista. vista has all these gadgets and weird things, and if you don't use computers often, they probably will confuse you, and slow you and your system down. (in my experience.)

As I said to Hambares, I'm glad Vista isn't as bad as some people portray it to be (because one day in the future, I have to replace my PC laptop or desktop, and it'll probably come with Vista), but I'm still leaning towards XP, since Vista will probably confuse the heck out of her.

Ah, well see. :)

Boo.

My grandmother got a new laptop with Vista (her old computer had 98) and no one can help her with it when she needs troubleshooting advice. (My mom runs XP and I have Mac OS X.) I've only played around with it a bit, but it seems really confusing to me. It's like Microsoft tried to be user-friendly, and just made everything harder to figure out. I adore Mac OS X, but price wise your mother might be better off with XP.

Haha, I have XP and Mac OS X too, so if my mom got Vista, I'll be no help to her. But she's in Italy... who knows which OS they use? ;P I've played around with Vista too when I went to Best Buy, and it confused the hell out of me.

Yeah, I think XP is the way to go. I'm sure Vista will overtake XP one day, but it'll probably take 5 to 7 years to get to that (I hope). :)

people either really love it or really hate it. i think you need bigger memories to run it or something, but i'll be damned if your mom can get any pc with xp. they're all vistas now, so she'll end up with a mac if the vista is a no-go. so that's what it comes down to: vista or mac. (go with mac.)

But Evy, she's in Italy. I think they still have XPs there. *snerk* ;P

But no, seriously. I'm worried about my mom handling both Vista and Tiger/Leopard. I think it'll be a waste of money to buy a mac if she won't be using 70% of the softwares installed there (since she will only use it for word processing, email, internet and to get used to computers in general).

On the other hand, Vista sounds like a Windows version of a mac. Ergo, not good. :| So here's to hoping there's still XP in Italy! I'll tell my mom to look for a laptop with XP and well, we'll see. :| (I looked at laptops in the internet and some of them still has XP.)
